The published 2026 window has passed
The organiser’s project description, published by DGRM (Portugal’s directorate-general for maritime services), identified Ribeira d’Ilhas and 6–12 October 2026 as a window in which the organisers could choose suitable conditions. That window has ended. The notes below describe the 2026 edition; check the World Surf League calendar for a future edition before booking around the contest.
Choose north-coast access or town evenings
For repeated visits to the contest, compare an address toward Ribeira d’Ilhas with the actual journey to the event entrance. For a mixed holiday with meals and evenings on foot, the old centre may be a better base, with a separate plan for beach transfers. A listing described as Ericeira can sit well outside that central walking loop; check the map and the final approach before booking.
Do not assume a parking space or an event shuttle
Treat parking, road access and any special transport as details to confirm in the current visitor instructions. If using ordinary public transport, check the service for the travel date, the stop and the last return. For a Lisbon day trip, allow time to reach the beach as well as Ericeira town; the town arrival is not the end of the journey.
Build a useful day even if the contest is on hold
Keep a town walk and meal as a flexible alternative. More than one night can give you another viewing opportunity, but it cannot guarantee that a particular round or final will run while you are there. Choose refundable terms that fit your own tolerance for a changed plan, and avoid buying onward travel around a guessed finishing time.
Watching professional surfing is different from booking a lesson
The contest does not establish that Ribeira d’Ilhas is suitable for your own surfing or swimming. If you want a lesson during the trip, use the separate ability guide and let a qualified school choose the location and timing. For families or reduced mobility, confirm the event’s actual viewing access, toilets and routes rather than assuming that the normal beach facilities describe the temporary event layout. Since 7 May 2026 the maritime authority has closed marked zones below the unstable cliff at Ribeira d’Ilhas; stay out of signed areas whatever the event layout.
