Old centre: strongest for walking
The historic centre puts restaurants, small shops, the fishing harbour and Praia dos Pescadores into an easy daily loop. It suits short stays and car-free evenings; the trade-off is tighter access, less predictable parking and more distance from some reserve breaks.
South side: sand and arrival logic
A base toward Foz do Lizandro can favour broader beach time and easier road access. It feels less woven into the old-town evening circuit, so decide whether the beach or a walk-to-dinner rhythm matters more.
North coast: surf first
Stays toward Ribeira d'Ilhas and the reserve can reduce repeated surf transfers. They are weaker for spontaneous town evenings and may make a car or deliberate local transfer plan more useful.
